The Arlington Heights Police Department in Arlington Heights, Illinois, had been housed in a cramped, outdated building for years. When the time finally came to begin planning and constructing a new facility, one of the design team’s main goals was to improve comfort and efficiency for officers and staff. That’s why they started the design process by thinking about workflows that would save time and promote efficiency.

One major improvement was locating the duty bag lockers between the briefing room and the garage, so officers could pick up their gear on the way to their patrol cars. Spacesaver duty bag lockers were placed on an extra-tall integrated base that elevated the lowest lockers off the floor and brought the upper edge into alignment with the adjacent long gun lockers.

Like many cities and towns throughout the Midwest, this city north of Chicago needed to cut down thousands of ash trees that had been infested with an insect called the emerald ash borer. When it came time to design the city’s new police facility, the planning team incorporated wood paneling made from those trees into a community room and other areas in the building. It was a great way to make use of a resource that would have been wasted.

Spacesaver collaborated with Wood Design, Inc., a woodworking firm across the street from our factory, to incorporate ash wood into FreeStyle® Personal Storage Locker benches to coordinate with the reclaimed wood elsewhere in the facility.

Biological evidence needs to be refrigerated to ensure its integrity for analysis.

Evidence collected at a crime scene might include larger items like clothing or bedding as well as smaller items. That’s why this refrigerated evidence locker, which is about the size of a residential refrigerator, is divided into six secure compartments with three compartments equipped with a drop slot. Officers can deposit multiple small items via the drop slot, freeing up space in the larger compartments. A toothed flap helps maintain a secure chain of custody by preventing someone from reaching in after evidence has been deposited.

Inventory control is vital in military armories, where lost or missing weapons could leave soldiers unprepared or endanger personnel. Even the most sophisticated electronic inventory tracking systems can’t be used as intended if weapons are disorganized within the armory itself.

Staff at this armory were dealing with three issues: an impending lack of storage space for incoming weapons, an on-going lack of storage for spare barrels and boxed items, and the disorganization that resulted from the need for more flexible components to store everything properly.

The local Spacesaver consultant worked with them and with Spacesaver’s engineering team to solve all three problems at once.

The design team for this activity-based workplace needed to create an appealing office environment while also optimizing expensive square footage in the heart of Manhattan.

The perimeter of the new office featured shared workspaces with large windows and views of Times Square and the surrounding area, and the corridors and work areas toward the building’s core also needed to be bright and welcoming.

Library furnishings need to meet modern expectations, even when they’re located in historic buildings. That was the case in this reading room in the Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress.

Materials stored in the room are changed out frequently, so the librarians wanted the convenient adjustability of steel shelving. They also wanted the shelving to blend in with the room’s historic character, so they worked with their local Spacesaver consultant and with Spacesaver’s Joint Projects team to design a solution.
